Bats back up Stammen as Nats win

The Nationals’ bullpen needed a break on Sunday afternoon, and Craig Stammen gave it to them. The right-hander delivered a quality start and helped Washington defeat Milwaukee, 8-3, at Nationals Park.


The bullpen has been overworked of late, pitching 24 2/3 innings this week. Interim manager Jim Riggleman went so far as to say that Stammen may have to take one for the team, but it didn’t turn out that way.

Stammen pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits. He retired the first seven batters, then got into a minor jam, allowing an RBI single to Felipe Lopez in the third inning.
